Thinking Critically September 22nd, 2010We need to be able to think critically about what we read and make informed decisions! The Internet is a major source for much of our information today, yet there is so much conflicting information out there, it is hard to know what is truth and what is not.
Your task is to READ through 2 different websites that discuss a substance called DHMO and evaluate them. You will then write a COMMENT to this that shares your thoughts about DHMO.

2. Go here to learn about the benefits of DHMO and READ through this page carefully.
3. Write a thoughtful COMMENT about what YOU think about DHMO after reading these 2 sites, support your opinion with facts that you read. Be sure to use complete sentences and check your spelling & grammar before submitting! (20 pts)

I think it is not good at all because on the page that says it is bad is that you can die due to a small inhalation of DHMO.

I think DHMO is dangerous because it’s given to vicious dog involved with recent deadly attacks, it messes up the persons DNA, its associated with killer people. Although its colorless and odorless it still seems dangerous. And plus the webpage with all the bad stuff has more data than the page wit all the good stuff.

I think that DMHO is dangerous because it can kill people. And it is actually used in commercials and and other adverts.

I think it is a danger because there are several facts about if the person inhales a little of it it could kill you and it could lead to killing your self.

I think the it is bad because it is used to kill dogs .That one of the pusin and in is in acid rain.

I believe DHMO is not a very good thing. If the dangers on the first page I read are all true then I do not support the use of it. I think it is wrong that dogs are put down with it. It must be painful to have an acidic chemical put into you. Even though it supposedly has some benefits it is not a good thing in my mind.

I believe that DHMO is bad, because the website that stated that it was bad had proof from scientist whom said it was bad. The website that said it was good had no evidence to back itself up.

I honestly think that DHMO is more dangerous than beneficial. I mean come on if it can kill me doesn’t that mean it’s dangerous? I think it’s dangerous because if you went to both of the pages assigned then you would realize how there is a lot more information on how it is dangerous then how it is beneficial. And if there isn’t a lot of information on how it is beneficial than how can we be convinced that it’s beneficial and not dangerous.

I think I agree with hydrogen hydroxide. I believe it,s good and if it is used properly, it can help, even for humans. Besides, if DHMO is so bad and DEADLY, why would we keep using it?

After reading both websites and thinking about the things the different sites were saying, I haven’t really came to a decision but I have some thoughts about DHMO. I don’t really think that it’s THAT bad because all of the ‘dangers’ one website listed were like, ‘When inhaled’, ‘In killer cyclones’, and so on, because if handled properly, it could be very helpful. Also, I don’t think the website that talks about the benefits of DHMO is that thought through because it doesn’t have a lot of information on it and it basically says the same things over and over.. it kind of looks like a hippie wrote it or something. So, basically I just think that Dihydrogen Monoxide CAN be dangerous, but if not handled properly, more often than not there will be more dangerous outcomes. However, I don’t think it’s good, clean, and just oh-so wonderful like the other site says. So pretty much yea.

I believe dihydrogen monoxide is not a good thing, because it has very little up sides and many down sides. It is found in many disasters such as acid rain and hurricanes. Prolonged exposure to it can cause death along with inhalation.

I think that it is both depending on how you use it. The thing is that it’s only deadly if you aren’t super duper cautious. If you use it the right way with the right equipment it can be really helpful. There have been many deaths from DHMO and there have been many experiments. It is used by elite athletes to improve performance, and believed to improve health and growth of the body.

I think that dhmo.org is right. That website had facts to back up what their ideas. The website that says it’s good doesn’t have very good information that backs up its ideas. The website that says it can be dangerous also says it has some uses. The other website said it was ALL good. To me, that doesn’t seem very realistic.

I think that it is a good thing, when handled properly. It can be bad if not handled right, it is used as poison, in homemade bombs, and it causes a person to not act like themselves. It was also involved in all the recent school shootings.

My opinion of DHMO is that it is a very deadly chemical. Do not get it too close to your eyes or any part of your body or you could be seriously burned. If I went near any electrical cords or anything that plugs in I would be careful not to get the chemical near it because it can cause short circuits. I really don’t think that you should give this chemical to vicious dogs because there are other ways to keep it alive and tame them. This is a serious chemical and should not be around children without adult supervision. You have to be seriously careful about it. If I ever get near DHMO, I’m going to be very cautious and careful around it.

DHMO to me is not good or bad because it enhances functionality and growth. But on the other hand it has caused deaths, major burns and it is also a major component in acid rain. From these reasons I have concluded that HDMO is not good or bad

I personally think that DHMO, sounds very dangerous. Not only because the first website has many more facts than the second website, but also, that in the second website it says “when handled properly, it enhances nature, more than destroying it.”. What if it isn’t handled properly? What if a young child gets a hold of it? These are questions that I would be persuaded, to think it’s a benefit, if they were answered. But until then, I am sure that it’s dangerous…

I think that DHMO can be either dangerous or useful depending on how you use it. This is not unlike car use. If you drive sober with your seatbelt on, you are probably not going to get hurt, But if you drive drunk, or without a seatbelt, you are probably going to hurt yourself or others. DHMO can be used as medicine, it occurs naturally, and is environmentally safe. However, it can also cause acid rain, be used to inflict pain, or even cause tornadoes and hurricanes. So from my point of view, it’s a good thing if used safely, and not when it’s not.

I think Dihydrogen monoxide is dangerous. Because people die due to accidental inhalation. Also because of unpleasant not life-threatening side effects.

I think DHMO is dangerous and should not be used. Even though people have said that it is apart of nature, it can destroy it too. It has been found in nuclear power plants and due to accidental inhalation (even small amounts) people have died. Also it can cause burns. (gaseous DHMO). Even though many people allow this chemical in their homes and around other humans, it has been found in pre-cancerous tumors. DHMO is more dangerous than people have found it to be.

I think that with all the risks of DHMO, I wouldn’t use it. I mean, when you go on both sites the one with all the dangers has more information than the one with the benefits. It just seems (well for me) too dangerous to use. It says that it was found in biopsies that were related to cancer. Which can kill you!! And it destroys the environment where you live. Do you want a destroyed place to live? I didn’t think so.

We can’t necessarily ban DHMO,but, we do need raise awareness about it. If it is true that DHMO can also be helpful then we at least have to work on illegal use of it. Although DHMO can help our growth it may also influence are brains. The shootings in high-schools found that DHMO was in the bodies of each kid that was involved in the shooting. Now some peoples first reaction would be “oh we will just take the guns from people so they can’t shoot each-other.” Remember though taking away guns from people is only taking away guns from good people and not the bad guys who still get ahold of them. But that doesn’t even help us! People need to start focusing on the cause and not the effect. Making sure that kid can’t get a hold of DHMO and using illegally can DULL but not stop the effect, but thats still a worthy change.

Ok, so it obviously can kill. Its harmful, and can cause problems. Yeah, but so can many other things. The beneficial page on DHMO tells us that DHMO wasn’t made in a lab, but that nature created it. But it also says, “Support the use and distribution of hydrogen hydroxide in your neighborhood, city, state, and country!” Distribution. Didn’t it also tell us that DHMO is NATURAL???!!! If its natural, then why do we have to distribute it? Also, it told us, “Don’t let an uneducated and terror-stricken mob of fanatics railroad you into giving up your right to choose!” Choose what? But the more importantly is the belief that if people want you to do something they agree wit, they tend to exaggerate a little bit, which is what I think the second website is doing. All in all, I think that it is a little more dangerous than helpful. Kind of like Devils Club. It hurts if you get it in you and will give you a terrible itch, but, the roots make something that can help you. ( Im not sure what tho)

The websites of DHMO says it’s safe but you can’t always trust what’s on the Internet, so I wouldn’t use. On the second website it says that it’s safe and it enhances the functionality, growth, and health of people. It also says it enhances nature too. The other website says it’s dangerous; it says that it has toxic substances, diseases, and environmental hazards.

After reading the two sites I think DHMO is kind of scary. Just the fact that it enhances growth and health on any living thing. It seems dangerous if you don’t handle it properly. This is what I think about DHMO after reading the two sites.

I kind of think that they should ban DHMO because the first website said that it was known to cause thousands of deaths. The second website said it was useful in some ways, but if it’s killing people, we shouldn’t use it.

I don’t think DHMO is bad for you, because people actually use it like athletics, industry, military, commercial operations, and even private individuals. It has been shown that it helps growth, and health for many forms of life including humans it’s been part of nature longer than we have. Also if you handle it properly it helps nature rather than destroys it.

I think that DHMO can be very deadly because if you inhale just a small quantity than you can die. But also ! think it can be very good for you because it can help in growth and health. I also think it can be good for you because of the athletic people use it but you have to be careful with it.

I think DHMO is scary, because if you don’t handle it right, it can be very dangerous. As you read the articles, it clearly states that DHMO can kill. DHMO should be banned FOREVER!

Bad because DHMO is dangerous it can harm people and can harm animals it is a toxic subject and it can do great harm if u drink it. It is found in many explosive devices and in poisonous compounds.

I think DHMO is dangerous! People shouldn’t ignore it. I mean it can kill people. If it is as bad as that don’t you think it should be taken into consideration? I read both webpages. And the page about the dangers of DHMO had way more information than the website about The benefits of DHMO.
