Early Tuesday morning more than 2,000 box jellyfish were found washed up on Oahu South Shore. They covered the shore from Waikiki beach to Ala Moana beach park where about 175 people were treated for stings. Only one man out of all those people actually had to go to the hospital because of trouble breathing. It is said that it happens seven to ten days after a full moon and Tuesday was the peak of this incident. Beach goers should watch for warning signs posting on beaches or talk to lifeguards before entering water especially if allergic to jellyfish stings, if stung wash out with Vinegar.
Does this occur in any other place besides Hawaii?

Wow, that is a lot of jellyfish! I thought this was interesting because I have actually been stung by a box jellyfish at Waikiki beach before, and apparently it was after a full moon! Although Hawaii is not the only place that jellyfish come out after a full moon.
Francene Norton, a reporter from, The World Today says that a new species of box jellyfish were found on the outskirts of water around the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. (November 2005) James Cook University’s jellyfish expert, Jamie Seymour compares the spectacle to occurrences in Hawaii, “Teresa Carrette and myself did some work in Hawaii on their box jellyfish… And low and behold, what have we got is exactly the same thing’s happening. We’ve got these animals turning up at the outer reef, eight to 10 days after full moon. They come in, they spawn, they die and they disappear again.”
