Expectations:

  • Everyone deserves a safe environment in which to work.
  • Everyone deserves the right to work hard without the interference of anyone else.
  • Everyone deserves to be respected.
  • Try your best at all times. Being a slacker is disrespecting your talents!

Policies:

  • Bring the following items to each class:
    • computer (we are trying to move to a paperless classroom)
    • planner
    • writing utensil
    • English folder with lined writing paper
    • reading book
    • homework on the day it is due.
  • Homework is due at the beginning of class. No excuses. If you feel you have a valid reason for an extension, please approach me before class begins and we’ll talk.
  • Print your homework before class starts. If you need to leave the class to pick up printed work after the bell has rung, you will lose one grade every five minutes into the class.
  • If you miss class, check in the homework folder and then speak to me either before school when you return or at the END of the class. You have one day to make up your work for every day you miss. I will not chase you down to make up tests or hand out make-up work; YOU are responsible for seeing me to receive make-up work and set up appointments for missed tests. You have one week to make up any missed tests. I will post them on the board.
  • If the bell has rung & you are not in class, you will be marked tardy and will owe me forty minutes of detention after school THAT DAY.  NOTE: 3 tardies = 1 absence!
  • Be responsible for YOUR OWN learning. Copying work from other students, either on a test or ANY other assignment is unacceptable. PLAGIARISM includes copying even one sentence from another source and using it as your own! Cheating incidents will be handled on an individual basis and will involve grade deductions, deductions on citizenship grades, and parental contact.
  • No food/drink is allowed in class other than water in a clear plastic container!
  • I am trying my hardest to help you learn all the skills of English Language Arts; I anticipate that you will try your hardest to learn them. If you need extra help, I am always available before or after school.

Class Grading Procedure:

Citizenship: You will begin each quarter with a S+ grade. Any behavior that does not show respect for self, others or property will result in a “0” for the day. Some example behaviors include:

  • Tardiness or failure to bring class materials
  • Any rude, disruptive or inappropriate behavior (especially with a substitute)

The following is a grading scale for quarterly citizenship grades:

  • S+…No “0” daily grades
  • S …One or two “0” daily grades
  • S- …Three “0” daily grades
  • U …Four or more “0” daily grades/cheating

Participation

You will be graded everyday on class participation based on the rubric below. You have the opportunity to earn 5 pts each class for participation.

  2. Engaged in class, active in discussions, giving explanations & asking questions.
  3. On task, paying attention to what is being done or what is supposed to be done.
