Short Story Review
Monday of next week, there will be the final test of the Short Story Unit. This final test is weighted heavily in your first quarter grade. To prepare for the test you should review the following material:
Plot
- Be able to identify the elements of plot on a plot curve and explain what these elements encompass.
- Be able to identify the types of conflict in fiction.
- Be able to identify the climax and conflict a short story
Characterization
- Be able to describe the difference between direct and indirect characterization.
- Be able to identify the types of indirect characterization.
- Be able to identify characterization used in a short story
Setting
- Be able to define setting
- Be able to identify how the setting impacts the actions of a short story
Point of View
- Be able to identify the four points of view in short stories
- Be able to identify the point of view of sections of text
- Be able to identify how the point of view of a story affects the action and telling of the story
Symbolism and Tone
- Be able to define symbolism
- Be able to define tone
Theme
- Be able to define theme
- Be able to identify themes in a short story
Irony
- Be able to define irony
- Be able to define the three types of irony
The test will consist of several multiple choice questions on topics from your notes for various short story elements, as well as being able to identify those elements in a short story that will be given to you to read on the day of the test.
