Species diversity=the variety of different living things.
Genetic diversity=the variations between different species, the characteristics passed down form parents to offspring.
Ecosystem diversity=the great variety of environments produced by the different interactions of the living like plants and animals and non-living world like water and rocks.
Biodiversity helps the productivity of ecosystems where each species, big or small, all have an important parts in the ecosystem. More plant species means more crops. More difference in species makes equal balance for everything living. Healthy ecosystems can rebound and come back better from a natural disaster or any disaster.
The human population keeps growing, and it damages the Earth because we cut down trees and build buildings and all sorts of things on top of ecosystems. Over hunting is also a problem, because then the ecosystem’s system gets messed up. The invasion of non-native species is also a problem, because they either eat things that shouldn’t be eaten as much of or they are eaten and could be poisonous to some species. Pollution and climate change are very bad, because it affects ALL environments and ecosystems.
Roughly 1.4 million species are known to science, but because many species are undescribed, an estimated 10-30 million species likely exists at present.
-This really surprises me, because that’s a huge difference in what we know and what we could/should know.
Simply using the most conservative values of the slope, and assuming the true biodiversity of tropical forests is roughly 10 million species, the projected rate of loss of species is 27,000 per year, and three during this hour.
- This is really surprising because that is a whole species we lose!Three an HOUR??? What??? Now THAT’S disturbing.
Species diversity directs to the variety of different living things. Genetic diversity directs to variation between individuals of species. Ecosystem diversity directs to the great variety of environments.
Biodiversity improves ecosystem productivity. When an ecosystem is healthy, it can defend itself better from diseases and disasters. Diversity aids natural development for all species. Having a variety of different plant species means that there will be a great number of crops.
We play a big role on the loss of many species by our rapid growing population. We have eradicated half of the world’s forests. We occupy most of the fresh water, and the world’s net primary productivity on earth. We also harvest most of the food in the ocean.
What is very surprising is that the original extent of tropical rain forests was 15 million km2. However, half of it is gone now, which leaves 7.5-8 million km2.
1. What is your reaction to this story? Explain WHY.
I agree with her, except for the part that makes it seem like the corporations are the bad guys and the government are the good guys. Because the government works with corporations to get money and power.
2. What surprised you?
The numbers were bigger then i thought.
3. What did you have questions about?
was the point of the story to make people not buy consumer products?
4. What are you skeptical about?
how the government looks, because the government have control over media, and it makes sense because the government looks like the good guy, and the fact that you don’t focus on the government and corporation that much
5. What important points did you identify?
only 4% of original forests left in US. The Amazon is losing 2,000 trees a minute. there are 100,000 different chemicals used in producing consumer goods, and only a handful are tested if they effect your health. Factories produce 4 billion pounds of pollutants a year. 30% of Congo children in school have dropped out to go mine coal on the Congo. 99% of the consumer goods we buy are trash by 6 months. we have twice the consumption now then fifty years ago. planned obsolescence is a plan to design consumer goods to lost a short period of time. the main thing for a american to do is to watch tv or shop. the average american produce 4.5 pounds of trash a day, 70 times more at factories, dioxin is the most dangerous toxin out there.
6. What do you think was Annie’s purpose in creating the video?
To get people to buy less consumer goods. as well as to go green.
7. How effective was she in presenting her arguments? Explain.
she did well on focusing on at a time and supporting that with numbers and images that draw you in.
8. How effective was she in helping you make decisions and getting you to take action?
I havent had enough time to do anything that involves this sort of ‘stuff’.
1. What is your reaction to this story? Explain WHY. I think that she dramatized this whole subject a lot and it made you not want to watch it, but she had a couple points.
2. What surprised you? I was surprised that we cut so many trees in the Amazon.
3. What did you have questions about? I was wondering how we would be able to make a circular revolving system were we would throw nothing away.
4. What are you skeptical about? Pretty much everything she said like how we are paying nothing for what we buy, that we pay too much.
5. What important points did you identify? That we produce terrible toxins in our products, therefore everybody will die?
6. What do you think was Annie’s purpose in creating the video? She is trying to scare people into helping and supporting there cause.
7. How effective was she in presenting her arguments? Explain. Not very well it made me angry and want to stop watching.
8. How effective was she in helping you make decisions and getting you to take action? Explain. Well im definitely not gonna help or support her cause.

There is three different kinds of biodiversity they are species, Genetics, and ecosystem diversities. Species diversity refers to the variety of different living things. Genetic diversity refers to the variations between individuals of a species — characteristics passed down from parents to their offspring. Ecosystem diversity refers to the great variety of environments produced by the interplay of the living (animals and plants) and non-living world (earth forms, soil, rocks and water).
Biodiversity is important because it boosts a ecosystems productivity. Species depend on each other, and that is a good thing, because one species can’t do everything, or at least do everything really well.
How we lose biodiversity is by extinction of species. This is happening from over hunting and loss of habitat.
Reflecting on the Story of Stuff »« What is there to know about Biodiversity?
Types: There are three different types of biodiversity. Species diversity, genetic diversity and ecosystem diversity. All three of interact with other things, change over time and from one place to another. Species diversity is explaining the variety of different living things. Genetic diversity is the variations between. Lastly, ecosystem diversity is the variety of environments made by the living things such as animals and plants.
Why is it important? Well with out biodiversity nothing would produce productively. In some way another all species connect to each other and biodiversity helps with all that.
Threats: Extinction is very common and well know. It is also one of the biggest threats. Over hunting has also been something that has caused a big decrease in animals and living things. They aren’t producing as fast as we are killing. Another threat is Habitat loss/fragmentation. This means that the habitat the living things are living in is being destroyed or not providing what the organism needs anymore. Pollution also keeps on destroying more and more wild life all the time. If we could prevent pollution our world today would be a lot more thriving. Lastly, climate change has caused a suffer as well.

The three types of biodiversity-
Species: the variety of different things living on earth, a species is a population of organisms that reproduce by interbreeding
Genetic: the difference between organisms in a species
Ecosystem: the combination of communities of living things
Biodiversity boosts the ecosystem because every organism no matter how small has a job. Without the different living organisms the world wouldn’t be inhabitable. If there were only humans on the earth and they were exactly the same they wouldn’t last very long and the planet would soon be inhabitable.
Extinction is the biggest threat due to hunting, habitat destruction, and species introductions. I find it disturbing that we have destroyed half of the worlds forests. It is also disturbing that Rhino horns sell for so much and that there are so few of them left.

Types of Biodiversity
The three types of biodiversity are: species diversity, genetic diversity, and ecosystem diversity. Species diversity is basically the variety of living things. However, genetic diversity refers to different traits in a single species. Lastly, ecosystem diversity is basically the variety of the different types of ecosystems.
Why do We Care?
It seems to me that we care about biodiversity because we make lots of money off of harvesting renewable resources. These resources are very important and include: food, clothing, shelter, and medicine. These are currently all multi-billion dollar businesses in the United States alone. Beyond this, of course, there is still the old argument that if to many species go extinct food chains will collapse. This in turn could lead to severe food shortages etc.
Threats to Biodiversity
Its seems to me that the three main threats to biodiversity are: habitat destruction, hunting and invasive species. Humans appear to be responsible for all of these. Poachers have nearly hunted the rhino to extinction. They have been responsible for introducing many invasive species that have lead to extinctions(e.g. the Nile Perch). Lastly, with our growing population we have continued to push back other forms of life. This leads to such things as cutting down the rainforest.
One of the things I find most disturbing is the whole invasive species issue. This is probably because we see this issue every summer with the black slugs. In addition, we have an invasive plant species right by our house (Orange Hawk-Weed) and we have been trying in vain to get rid of it for several years now. Also scary is the fact that 1/2 the rain forest has disappeared since the true extent of them was first documented. This is a disturbing statistic because we have just seen how important biodiversity is to our way of living.
Species diversity is the variety of different living things.
Genetic diversity is the variations between individuals of a species.
Ecosystem diversity refers to the great variety of environments.
Biodiversity increases ecosystem production, and provides services for the organisms that inhabit it. Humans killing habitat threatens biodiversity because the species have nowhere to live. Industrialization pollutes the air and land, and takes up old forest space. Over-hunting is also very serious. But habitat loss is the greatest threat. The most shocking thing to me was that rhino is worth 16,000 per pound, and 5 billion dollars worth of plants are sold each year.
