I read an article that said the National Institute of Health is giving $20 million in grant money to fund 13 newly approved embryonic stem cell research lines. When Bush was president, he put a ban on government funding for stem cell research, but now Obama has taken off the ban. During the ban, scientists who wanted to do stem cell research had to use their own money and could get nothing from the government. Now they can get a lot of money from the government, and people may be able to open up many more new lines. The embryos that are being used in the new research lines are unused and from fertility clinics. Even though there is a lot of controversy on using embryonic stem cells, I think that these new lines will be very beneficial to everyone.
This topic interested me because I don’t know for sure whether I am for or against stem cell research. I have heard the arguments for and against it and am leaning towards being for it. It would be really exciting if, with all these new research lines, scientists could discover a cure for cancer or something cool like that. Stem cell researchers finally have a big opportunity in front of them, and I hope they use it well.
Are you for or against stem cell research?
Do you think that the opening of these new lines will create lots of advances in the medical field?
