Have you ever been accused of grinding your teeth a lot? I know I have. In an articlie I read on http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/8355737.stm I found out that they now they have come out with a new type treatment. They now have a device that gives you a tiny shock. Now this shock wont hurt you, it is designed to loosen your mouth muscles. The nice thing about it is that it won’t wake you up when your sleeping.

Dr David Vivian, the dentist leading off the device, said that, “grinding can worsen existing anxieties. The broken sleep pattern caused by grinding can exacerbate any stresses or worries already being felt by the patient, and add an extra layer of anxiety to their lives. They may also be resorting to over-the-counter painkillers to treat side effects, such as headaches, and finding that they are having to increase the dosage all the time. This study, which was carried out on a small sample of patients, shows promising results. Further research will be necessary to establish the technology’s true potential.”

Here is a website that tells you ways to stop grinding your teeth.

My questions to you are:

Do you think that this shock will stop bruxism (fancy word for teeth grinding)?

What other uses could this electrical treatment be used for?

Stressed? Dark Chocolate Can Help

From: http://www.faeriesfinest.com/images/products/chocolate.gif

From: http://www.faeriesfinest.com/images/products/chocolate.gif

A recent study done by researchers in Switzerland showed that eating dark chocolate can reduce stress.  In the study the participants ate one dark chocolate bar (1.4 ounce) every day for two weeks. They ate half of the chocolate in the morning and the other half in the afternoon. Their stress levels were measured before and after the study and it showed that for people who have high stress levels a daily amount of chocolate can reduce stress. The study also showed that the chocolate had beneficial affects on their metabolism and microbial activity in the stomach.

This study adds to the other already know benefits of chocolate. Scientist have already found that chocolate is rich in a class of antioxidants called flavonoids, which have many health benefits.  Researchers are also looking in to other ingredients in dark chocolate that may have other health benefits, such as improving insulin sensitivity, reducing blood pressure, and improving mood.

This sound too good to be true to me, but I did notice that this study was done by the Nestle research center. Nestle is a producer of different chocolate products so maybe the study is a little biased, but I’m willing to give it a try anyways.

Do you think this is a legitimate study even though it was done by the Nestle research center?  Have you noticed any health benefits when you eat dark chocolate?

Eyeing Your Creativity

In this article scientist tested a person’s creativity. Scientist says that the rules of the left side of the brain keep a logical check on the broad brainstorming of the right side of the brain. A study published this week in the journal Brain and Cognition shows that when you boost the level of communication between the right side and left side of your brains your creativity increases. The test were done like this: the subject was given common objects and they were supposed to find an alternate use. They had one minute to make as many as they could think of.
After the test the subjects were to move their eyes from the left to right for 30 seconds. After this test was done they were to do the same test with the common object. The results were surprising the people had found more creative ways to do with the common object. So When your brainstorming for new ideas move your eyes left to right and see if you can think of better creative ways to do whatever you are trying to brainstorm.

Do you think this test really works?
What new things could your brain think of by just moving your eyes?

….Phobia….

Everyone is afraid of something. A phobia of some kind, in a recent survey of Americans this is what they found. From numbers 1-10, 10 being the least of the top phobias and 1 being the scariest thing to Americans today.

Number 10

The fear of going to the Dentist:  Although I think the dentist office smells so bad that it makes me want to puke most people have other thoughts about it. About 14.5 percent of Americans are completely afraid of going to the dentist. They will wait until the pain is so excruciating that someone else has to drag them there, before they step foot into that office. This is mainly due to a previous terrible experience with the dentist or just the fear of the idea of having a bunch of shiny tools in your mouth that can cause you great pain. This fear is called dental phobia.

Number 9

The fear of Dogs:  People deeply suffering from cynophobia may run at the site of a Chihuahua. As funny as this seems, its actually kind of sad. It can develop from being bitten by a dog or witnessing someone else getting bitten. Or you could just never of been near a dog and have no idea how to act around them.

Number 8

The fear of flying:  The Odds of dieing in a car crash are 1:100, the odds of dieing from heart disease are 1:5, and the odds of in a plane crash are 1:20,000. As extremely in favor of the safety of flying compared to driving a car and happening to get a disease there are still 25 million people in the U.S.A. who suffer from aviophobia and will never at all costs get into a plane. The reasons are the fear of dieing in a plane crash and claustrophobia.

Number 7

The fear of Thunder and Lightening:  Severe Weather Phobia holds 73% of the populace of a college in a panic. These people are just afraid they’re palms sweat, their heart rate increases, they may have meltdowns when they come into contact with thunder and lightening.

Number 6

The fear of the dark:  Every kid has had nightmares of some creepy goblin creature coming out and attacking them as soon as the lights go out. But is this fear grows to extremes and stays with them it is soon called nyctophobia.

Number 5

The fear of heights:  Not to be confused with Mrs. Heitz. Acrophobia holds most the populace. If looking off a tall building freaks you out and you want to grab onto something it means you have this phobia.

Number 4

The fear of people:  This is social phobia. It’s the fear of public speaking and not only that but just speaking in front of a few people. Symptoms of this fear include blushing, shaking, stuttering, or just the feeling of wanting to hide in a hole. It’s very common. Most people have this.

Number 3

The fear of no escape:  Not everyone can be a Houdini. 1.8 million Americans suffer from agoraphobia. Its like claustrophobia, except it doesn’t even have to be a small room. People with this fear avoid places like elevators, sporting events, bridges, public transportation, driving, shopping malls and airplanes. They rarely leave their home, do not like traveling in cars and hate crowded areas with a passion.

Number 2

The fear of spiders:  Arachnophobia can be intense. Screaming at the site of a giant spider such as that in Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings is understandable. But Arachnophobia can get intense to the point of screaming at a picture of a spider.

The Number 1

The fear of snakes:  Most people are afraid of snakes. Ophidiophobia is understandable too because researchers say that it may be imprinted into our very nature. One that was extremely helpful during the Stone Age, a very important contributing fact to our survival as humans.

Well there you have it. Everyone is afraid of something, are you afraid of any of the top ten? What do you think would be number eleven on the list of phobias?

Healthy Or Not?

Eating soy, you think that eating soy would make you healthy and fit don’t you. Well recent test show that eating too much soy can have harmful effects on you such as female fertility and reproductive development. Soy is everywhere in the American diets. Most of today’s baby food is made up of soy products. Most schools have started putting soy into there lunches to help reduced the risk of heart disease.
With the recent test on animals soy shows that large amount of estrogenic compounds or what is found in soy can be harmful to women fertility. Even though the test has only been done on animal’s scientist believe that it will have the same effect on humans. One study showed that soy led to reduced fertility and abnormal embryo development in female mice. They were fed one to ten micromoles in their drinking water for four days. The highest doses were related with fewer eggs that were successfully fertilized and increased cell death in developing embryos. In another study, young female rats were fed high, medium, or low doses of soy. Those fed the largest quantities from birth to weaning had reproductive effects later.

So what do you think does soy really effect your reproductive system?
Do you think that humans will have the same effects as rats and mice?
How much soy do you think you eat in one day?

Replacing A Rewards System

From: http://www.freeimages.co.uk/jumpto/gallery.htm

From: http://www.freeimages.co.uk/jumpto/gallery.htm

The article I read was about people with severe depression. They recently found a treatment that has shown to be pretty successful for the first tests. The treatment is implanting electrodes into the patients’ nucleus accumbens. This is a part of the brain with a major role in the “reward system.” This study has also shown that the reward system in the brain may be impaired in depressed people. The reward system gives the ability to be able to endure a good experience, and creates a pleasant anticipation for the future. Therefore, if a person has an impaired rewards system, they no longer forge plans for the future, and can’t endure the pleasure of anticipation.

The study included ten people who suffer from severe depression. These are people have spent years out of work, unable to recognize happiness, and have tried many other forms of treatment. Out of the ten, five people have had significant recovery. They are involved with a lot more things, and are much happier just days after the study. They say that this finding has the capability to help those who were thought to have no treatment available for their condition.

I thought this was an interesting article because many people don’t consider depression as a disorder, or clinical issue. What I thought was interesting is that they are actually finding the things that depressed people are lacking, or is dysfunctional in them. I thought it was cool that they found something that they could do for people who suffer from such severe depression. I can only imagine what it would be like to have no happiness in life, or nothing to look forward to.

What do you think some major causes of severe depression are?

Do you think this treatment is a success even though only half of the people that had the surgery recovered from depression?

I found some link relating to this topic
