Ralph Waldo Emerson was the one of the transcendentalist thinkers. He believed that being yourself is one of the most important things in our lives. He wrote in the Self-Reliance, “What I must do is all that concerns me, not what the people think.” This quote is important for me because it showed me that I must be myself no matter what people think. Most of the people in my culture believe that what people think matters, and if you act like yourself people will judge you; they exclude you from the society. However I must be myself and show the people that is not right. If people would start to be themselves the world would be a better place to live. A lot of teenagers just like me cannot express themselves and it even causes suicides. I must do what I believe is right. If I do not do what I think is right, then it wouldn’t be my own life. After Emerson wrote this quote he wrote, “You will always find those who think they know what is your duty better than you know it. It is easy in the world to live after the world’s opinion.” If you worry about what other people think about you or your decisions, you will never be happy and you will always be under a shadow. If you let others choose for you; you will never be able to live their life. Emerson made me realize I have to be strong and brave to do what I want to do.
